Birch

Birch drum shells are possibly the most typical ones on the market nowadays. Birch trees are plentiful, which allows the wood to be marketed at a lower price. You can locate both low-end and high-end birch drum sets, only because it's an easy wood to find and use.

Birch timber is especially famous for it's tonal qualities, with peaks at the high and low end frequencies. Birch Snare Drum tend to seem round and full, with lots of projection.

Maple

Maple drum shells are the normal alternate to birch. Maple trees are available as easily as birch, but are offered for slightly higher cost.
Maple is a considerably harder and compact wood compared to Birch, and is much heavier. For many years, almost all drum kits were made exclusively from maple. This was in large part because of the Keller Drums company who made the majority of the high-end drums for all of the major drum manufacturers we know now.

Most luxury kits that you find will probably be created out of maple wood, since it's known for it's maximum resonance, and it is marginally higher mid. Drums made out of maple will create a more sound, and a warmer tone, but will not project up to birch.

Overall, buying maple shells is an excellent option, but you should be aware that they will probably come at a higher price.
